Whether you’re hosting a corporate function or a big beer fest, it’s becoming increasingly important to consider the environmental impact of your event and how to lighten your footprint.
Trying to ‘green’ an event can be a very difficult balancing act. You want to ensure your guests have a smooth, enjoyable experience at every touchpoint. At the same time, you want to ensure you’re making smart, environmentally friendly decisions wherever you can.
Here are some quick tips on what to consider to lower the environmental impact of your event:
Think of water-saving solutions
Regardless of whether you’re having an outdoor or indoor event, consider the use of self-sufficient portable toilets.
Let’s do some maths: An average toilet uses just over 13 litres of water per flush. If an event has 100 people, and each of those people use the toilet once during your event, that’s already over 1300 litres of water just flushed away.
Add another two litres per person on average for hand washing and you’re already well over 1500 litres. And that’s not even starting to consider the water involved in serving and preparing food and drinks for your guests.
Economical and eco-friendly
There are many stand-alone, connection-free portable toilet solutions that run on a set fresh and waste water capacity that is more than enough for an extended event. For example, the Fancy Flush Maxi Flush porta loos operate without any service connections and recycle water and chemicals for flushing purposes.
Another even more economical water-saving solution is the Fancy Flush Econo Unit which is fitted with two long-drops and no flush mechanism. A single unit is suitable for functions of up to 100 people.
Go off the grid
Wherever you can, try to make use of alternate sources of energy. For example, if you need power, request generators that run off biodiesel instead of normal diesel.
Using porta loos at your event doesn’t have to mean having your guests fumbling around using their cellphones as torches. Many of the Fancy Flush units are fitted with solar-panels to power the batteries for the lights – perfect for night-time events.
Smart waste management
The key to effective waste management at an event is convenience – by making it as easy as possible to correctly dispose of different waste materials, your guests are more likely to do it.
Make sure you have clearly marked bins located throughout the venue and at key points – especially near and inside the toilets. It’s also very important to ensure waste management solutions are in place for any porta loos you use at the event. By choosing the right service provider, you can be sure all waste will be handled safely and efficiently, without any run-off or potential pollution of groundwater.
