Don’t Get Caught Dirty Handed – Why You Need Hand Wash Stations At Events

When it comes to hygiene matters and the spread of germs of bacteria, hands are the number one culprits. Which makes it all the more alarming that an estimated 60% of South Africans don’t wash their hands properly after using the toilet (germophobes, continue reading with caution). It’s further estimated that 66% of South Africans don’t wash their hands with soap at all.

As we let that sink in, here are the top reasons why you should consider hiring hand wash stations for your next event:

Keep your guests healthy

The vast majority of gastrointestinal, respiratory and skin infections can be prevented simply by following proper hygiene habits – the most important being hand washing. By having hand washing stations available at an event, you can help encourage guests to wash their hands before and after handling food, and of course, after using toilets and urinals.

Cleanly convenience

While many portable toilet units come with built-in hand washing stations, as soon as you have urinals available, you will need separate hand washing stations in order for guests to practice proper hand hygiene.

This is also particularly important for family events, food festivals and markets – parents will need easy access to hand wash basins, and staff working with food need to be able to wash their hands continually.

Cost effective

Portable hand washing stations are a cost effective solution to help immediately improve the overall hygiene at any event. If basins are limited and not easily accessible, the majority of people at the event will simply get by without using them (remember that stat from the first paragraph?). By making them more readily available and conveniently located, proper hygiene habits will be easy to follow.

Hand washing 101

While we’re discussing the importance of the availability of hand washing stations, let’s also look at exactly how we should be washing our hands when we do. Studies have shown only 5% of people wash their hands the way they should in order to actually kill germs. That’s right – simply putting your hands under running water for a few seconds doesn’t cut it.

Here’s what we all should be doing each time:

  1. Wet your hands and apply soap.
  2. Rub your hands together until the soap forms a lather.
  3. Make sure you rub the top of your hands, between your fingers and under your finger nails.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
