10 Weird and wonderful toilets around the world

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”450″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Global travel is all about taking in new experiences and embracing different cultures. And sometimes, some of the most unusual surprises are waiting behind public bathroom doors. We’re talking about weird and wonderful toilet designs and placements that leave us scratching our heads – and sometimes high-tailing it out of there!

These are some of the most bizarre WCs we’ve encountered on the web. Got your own unusual bathroom tales to tell? Share them with us on our Facebook page.

For the exhibitionists

If you have a fear of getting ‘caught with your pants down’ a one-way glass toilet might be a stretch too far for you. One such toilet was placed outside London’s Tate Britain Museum, near a construction site as an exhibit titled ‘Don’t miss a sec’ by Italian artist, Monica Bovincini. An interesting statement on privacy and being watched. Would you be brave enough to give it a try?

Two’s a crowd

Skewing more toward the weird than the wonderful, toilet cubicles with more than just one toilet each certainly make for some awkward social encounters. Fancy getting into a flush face-off with a complete stranger? Probably not.

Reach for the stars (or just the toilet paper)

While there’s nothing weird about this toilet itself, there’s definitely an extra tall question mark over whose job it was to install the toilet roll holder.

The longest long drop

The toilets at the Barafu Camp on the side of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania are literal long drops – with very, very long drops below them. Certainly not for those with a fear of heights.

Toilet Island

If you were going to be trapped on an island, what’s one thing you’d take with you? Possibly toilet paper for this one. Toilet Island in Belize is very aptly named thanks to its functioning toilet. No lack of privacy here. We can’t help but wonder who decided to build it though and why.

Tub or toilet?

How is this toilet with a particularly long toilet bowl is supposed to be used? We’re not sure. But there’s certainly no lack of leg room.

A loo with a view

On our home ground, the SLOW Lounge at Cape Town International Airport boasts a loo with a view. You can sit on the porcelain throne and watch the planes come and go while you ‘go’ in a slightlydifferent way behind (what we hope is) one-way glass.

Underwater WC

Fancy flushing surrounded by fishes? The Mumin Papa Café in Japan is surrounded by a real life aquarium on three sides. It cost a whopping $270 000 dollars to build, so might not top the priorities for your next home upgrades.

Now you see them, now you don’t

What do you do to prevent public urination on nights out on the town? These pop-up urinals emerge at 10pm and disappear back into the ground at 3am.

What’s for dinner?

We’d rather not know in this case. Of all the places to have a toilet, the kitchen probably doesn’t crack the list. And yet this particular floor plan places the loo right next to the gas stove. The magazines behind the toilet also suggest it’s most definitely been used. Each to their own.
